Understanding the Urinary-Leaks Problem

Throughout a woman’s lifetime, her body will naturally change. These changes may include her pelvic floor muscles becoming loose and sagging out of position, especially due to multiple vaginal deliveries, certain medications, and aging. When this happens, your uterus or bladder can start to fall, aconditionthat is referred to as uterine prolapse or bladder prolapse (cystocele), and may result in increased urinary leaks.

Who Can Experience Urinary Leaks?

Urinary incontinence (UI)can happen to any woman, but it can be more severe for those who suffer from uterine prolapse or bladder prolapse. Usually, urinary leaks may happen to women who:

  • Are in a post-menopausal age as the hormones that keep the pelvic muscles strong stop functioning
  • Have had several vaginal deliveries
  • Come from a family with a prolapse problem

How Common UI Occurs

A weak bladder is unpredictable, which makes it hard to assess how urinary incontinence may happen. However, it is a fairly common issue, and its risks increase as one ages. Also, afterseveral vaginal deliveries, the risk of developing uterine or bladder prolapse increases.

What Causes Prolapse?

The causes of uterine prolapse and UI may differ among individuals. When the pelvic floor muscles loosen up or become weak, they may result in stress incontinence and involuntary urine leaks. Some of the common issues that may cause the pelvic floor muscles to loosen and result in urinary leaks include:

  • The loss of pelvic muscle tone because of gradual aging
  • Chronic coughing, sneezing or straining
  • Constant pounding on the muscles, such as with serious runners
  • Heavy lifting and exercises where abdominal pressure pushes down (think CrossFit)
  • Obesity or being overweight
  • Injuries during childbirth, especially with the birth of large or heavy babies
  • Chronic constipation

Common Symptoms of Uterine Prolapse

Unless you have a severe case of weakened pelvic floor muscles, you may not exhibit obvious signs of uterine prolapse. However, if the uterus continues to slip further out of position, then more pressure may be exerted on other pelvic organs such as the bladder, and may result in urinary leaks. Some of the common symptoms to look out for include:

  • Pressure or a feeling of heaviness in the pelvic area
  • Developing urination problems, especially involuntary passing of urine (incontinence), a sudden urge to urinate, or the urge to urinate more frequently
  • Excessive or unusual discharge from the vagina
  • Constipation
  • Uterine tissues falling through the vaginal opening
  • Frequent bladder infections
  • Pain in the abdomen, pelvis, and lower back

UI Diagnosis

An expert physician can diagnose your UI problem and recommend the best remedies for your stress incontinence and urinary leaks. If you experience any of the above symptoms, you should not hesitate to seek help. When mild, pelvic floor exercises may help. But without treatment, the problem may escalate and conservative (easy) treatments may no longer be an option. Talk to an expert before the problem escalates.
